| I am wondering if I need a new heat sink. Lately I have notices some load fan noise from my PC. I have been running my case open as I have had trouble with overheats before. I am running a Pentium D 2.66 (dont laugh) and before I ran at about 58-60C, not I am running at about 78-83C. I have taken it apart and I have cleaned all the fans and I am having the same go of it. Any ideas? This really sucks for gaming.

you've cleaned the fans. Have you also cleaned the heatsink element? (It isn't supposed to have a patch of fur made out of dust over it, or inside)

Well, I'm just going to start by informing you that 78-83C is way too fucking hot. If you keep using that computer without fixing the problem, it will die, soon.
Try starting it up, and make sure to check that all of the fans are functioning.
If they are all functioning, try re-applying brand new Arctic Silver-5 thermal paste between the CPU HSF and the CPU. Be sure to remove the old paste before doing that.

78-83C isn't necessarily lethal for a pentium D as they will start throttling at that temp, and just slow down a lot.
I've seen a pentium D running around 100C and not dieing. Just going slow, and the occasional emergency shutdown when under heavy load. (I made that 100C go down to 60C by stripping of the piece of cloth made out of dust)
and for those that don't know: 60C is a normal temp for pentium D cpu's (As opposed to core2duo's which run a lot cooler)
Also, a failing powersupply can also cause a problem with heat (sending a too high voltage to it) but I doubt it in this case

| It's probably a build up of dust inside of the heat sink itself. And it probably wouldn't hurt to get new thermal paste.

There are usually not any physical issues with a heat-sink. I doubt they "break" unless you melted it. It probably came loose cause screws are being screwy, Take it out, and add new thermal paste and if that doesn't work, maybe newer fans or your cpu is shot.

| the heatsink is not the problem. heatsink cools down the cpu and isnt responsible for the noise, your problem lies with the power source. Get a new one for like 30 - 40$ and youll probably get rid of the sound.
