| okay so i recently got a virus and ive tried avast, avg, spybot, and kaspersky now they found trojans and malware and rootkits but my internet is still VERY slow and when i restart my computer it says ending process .netbrodcastevent and there are new links in my favorites that i didnt put(this isnt a shared computer) if it helps im running windows xp. any help? or can you guys tell me what i have so i can find a program that will fix? |

If I were to make a list of the dumbest places to post your question... CEF would be near the top of the list.
Sorry, but unfortunately you're gonna have to reformat your hard drive to fully undo the damage. This should give you a good opportunity to install vista, which doesn't require 3rd party anti virus/spyware applications like xp does. |

| Yes, which is why you will probably want to back up the important ones (which shouldn't be hard in this day of cheap hard drives and DVD burners). |

| when i first got the virus i decided to do system restore.............. the calendar got deleted by the virus |

Once your computer is compromised, you can not rely on a local virus checker as it may very well be compromised as well.
My suggestion to you is as follows:
Once the machine is up, unplug your network cable then shut down all applications that you can. Press Ctrl-Alt-delete and terminate all non-essential processes/applications. pretty much kill everything but <alg, system, system idle process, explorer.exe, svchost, sms.exe, winlogin.exe, services.exe, APPservices, and any video/mouse apps/trays you may have running. Definitely do not leave browser processes running.
Once done with this go into control panel and open internet properties. DO NOT OPEN A BROWSER TO GET THERE. Clear browser history, cookies, etc. Make sure empty temp IE folder when browser is closed is checked in advanced tab, and make sure you set your homepage to something safe. Set security and privacy settings to max. Apply changes and re-open internet options, if homepage change does not stay the same, it will require registry changes to fix while in safe mode. Open msconfig, and uncheck EVERYTHING under startup and hit OK. Make sure your wallpaper, screensaver and background settings are not set to web related content. Uninstall webshots or similar software if it is installed.
Shut the machine completely down <not just a restart>. Power the machine back up, and boot into safe mode w/ networking support. Open windows explorer <not IE>. enter http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner or http://security.symantec.com/ and run a remote virus and spyware scan <do not use your local one on your machine, and make sure it is not running>. Sad to still find people who hate vista because they just found one mistake, ahh I guess the future of the world relies on the children. First buy an external hard drive that can hold all your important files, and just transfer them through and then re-format your computer and reinstall the OS and then re-add your files.

I still hate vista. Why downgrade to something which will slow my PC down and the UI looks like shit. |

I would kill for a vista copy, I have a legal copy of home premium but I lost my disks  either way Ill have to buy it in the future, but yes I would not get it now. |
