You'd need about eight of those for a standard PC + monitor though, so as you can see it gets expensive quick.

Which is why I was thinking that he should go with a laptop instead.
I know that it wouldn't be as great for gaming, but it would be a hell easier to try to do this with a laptop instead of a full desktop tower.
Maybe it would work better on a desktop with a semi-decent/ low power usage video card. But then you wouldn't be able to play the higher end games very well.

on the long term it would be cheaper to just power your house with it, but it takes about 4.5 years for it too pay for it's self

Well soon they are going to be mass producing solar panels like crazy. You can print out solar cells (literally) with an inkjet printer. All you need is this special ink cartridge, special solar panel placstic paper thing and the printer.

Isn't practical yet, but if they mass produce it, you wont have to spend 5k anymore.

Not true, for what it would cost to power even a small house, would never pay off in a person's lifetime. The PC alone would take over 10 years to pay for itself.

jihad: one thing... Turbines are big. Turbines could possibly end up expensive. Unless you live in on a farm (no one around) in the center of the US (flat land) in a windy area (Chichago) than i wouldn't waste your time.

Though window turbines are very efficient if you have wind and not alot of houses around. (neighbors like to bitch)
