hmm yes i can , i have a program, you need to burn then boot into linux run the program and hack WEP Keys, Note: This Program is used by the FBI, So, SaviourFamily can i post it?

But still, I'm curious because my college has helped file lawsuits against p2p pirates and they have us register our MAC address with them before we can use their wireless, but I get about 6 private router signals from people in my dorm that are WEP'd and I have a seperate PCI card that I am going to use when downloading through their router (which is connected to the ethernet, and the ethernet does not require a password or anything) so I'll be both spoofing the MAC address of the card and connecting through other peoples routers, so even if they trace the download, it will lead to someone else's room, and I would hear something about them doing that, and I can A) change the MAC of the card or B) take the card out, and use the inbuilt wireless adapter to connect to the school's wireless and not download anything for a few days, then replug the wireless card and MAC spoof it.

Um... WEP crack is so easy. You could prolly just Google it...
Fun factoid. FBI did an exhibition where they cracked 128 bit WEP in 3 minutes.

That depends how much the wireless network is been used, and it relies on capturing so-called 'magic packets', which are ones which contain part of the encryption key.

The last half is cracked first and then the first half. I wouldn't say any home computer could do a 128-bit key unless the wireless network was up and running for 6months constantly with a half-decent PC sniffing and brute-forcing.
You have more chance if you simply go and ask for the key...hehe...
You do realize that it will be 10 years before we get close to using anything that the FBI and other agencies are using now right?...yeah you heard me, we are 10 years behind what tech they have out but you don't know of.

Breaking that protection, provided the network is setup well, there will be further obstacles, such as the MAC address filtering. Only certain client PC's may be allowed to access the network. Sure, you can spoof your MAC address, but you need to 'find' a valid one first.
Then you might have time-access limits, or unknown IP ranges that your PC has to fall into. There might even be gateway security employing AES, or a password you have to enter to get any further, all of which I have seen.

Search about for Knoppix or Auditor security tools collection.

Its a free download and it can be used to 'audit' a network, wired or wireless, and do all many of thing including bluetooth stuff etc. Its quite cool.

This itself is driven by a linux distro, and it boots from a CD when you want to use it, don't even need to install it.

I can't argue with the fact that most programs of the type are primarily written for linux, and any that may have been compiled for Win32 don't work as well. Thats just how it is.

Bam is right when he says linux is 'the one' for this. It does have the best potential. It doesn't mean you can't use windows for this stuff, I do all the time, there are other methods, and other tools.
If linux cannot be or you don't want to install it as a dual-boot in conjunction with Windows, then Vmware or some other virtual machine software is the only way to go if you wish to use the linux-specific apps.

On another note guys, there is no need for language, seriously, we can all voice our opinion without things getting heated. If we can't do this, then we're not going to achieve anything with the posts.

This thread should be locked, as the original post was about 'hacking wep keys' which isn't appropriate for the forums. Plus it has gone slightly off-topic.
