I bought this about a year ago

It has:

MS XP SP3 ATM

1GB 4200 Azen DDR2 Memory

LIte on 16X DVD RW

Logitech black PS/2 Mouse and keyboard

AMD 3500+ AM2 PROCESSOR 2.21 Ghz Rated at 3.50Ghz

200GB Hardrive

Video Card: EVGA 7600GS 256MB PCIX HDTV W/FAN

Benq 20 FP 202 LCD Monitor

All for about $1000

It was a prebuilt system, so if i havent listed a fan, case etc its already there..

Now should i just upgrade this? Or just bother buying a new computer

Which would be cheaper

and get a better vid card

Computer isn't too old, change the:
CPU (Intel)
Motherboard (motherboard changes with the CPU)
Graphics Card (depends on budget, recommend 9600GT/8800GT based on monitor resolution)
Maybe some more RAM (adding 1GB will be more than enough for XP)

What do you think the most highest game i can play..

Because right now this computer is running smooth for me but i also wanna know, whats the maximum game it can play..

Like what type of games can it handle

You should be able to play most 2006 games, anything newer than that is not something you will find common.

I'm with superweapons on this.

Although, no need to rip out the mobo as well as the CPU. Chances are he'll be fine putting a new AM2 CPU on that board. Depending on how 'new' the CPU is, it may require a BIOS update, but its nowhere near as freaky as people first think.

RAM...depends what combination you have. Do you have a 1GB stick, or 2x 512MB sticks (running in dual-channel) mode? Ensuring you have 2 identical sticks will bump up the system to dual-channel memory mode, for a 64-bit interface width to 128-bit, giving you a performance boost, although probably not very noticeable.

To be honest, adding to that paragraph, PC-4200 is actually the slower DDR2 sort. Its 533-Mhz, effective at half-that...so 266mhz. You do not actually beat the fastest DDR1 memory (PC-3200) until you get up to at least PC-5400 (667Mhz - 333 effective). Even them you can be hard pressed to get decent timings on your RAM unless you get performance stuff that you can tinker about with. OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 is the business by the way, and it is ridiculously cheap atm.
Anyway, don't let me sway you if you've made your mind up.

That 9600GT is decent by the way. For the price-point its awesome value. 256-bit memory interface, 512MB VRAM, highly overclockable core/shader/mem clocks... yeah...you can't go wrong Wink

Although they just released the 9800GX2 with 2GPU cores :0

Nah... been using em for ages. I've seen more USB devices or USB ports got up the duff then I have any PS2 device or PS2 port.
Just as much chance.

Optical PS2 mice are a lot more stable compared with their wireless USB counterparts.

Back to NeverForgotten then, 2x512mb is obviously 1GB tiotal (don't need a calculator for that one lol), and 2GB is the sweet spot price/performance-wise for most games.
4Gb is overkill unless you really have the for it. Industrial CAD apps etc... maybe...probably not. Windows 32-bit (x86) processes cannot use more than 2gb each.
Thats like someone saying I have 4gb in my machine and crysis runs sweet. Yeah but crysis is using about 800mb RAM tops at any given time. Thats the highest i've seen on any machine, even with high quality textures loaded in.

I would persoally in your situation, get a faster AM2 CPU, leave the motherboard. Replace the 2x512mb sticks with 2x1GB sticks. Make it a faster sort too. At least PC2-5400 (667Mhz)... your motherboard may well do PC2-6400 (800Mhz) but i'm unsure at this time.

Video card, well its up to you. I dunno what level of gamer you are, not sure what you play, and what you want out of it.

Instead of me trying to guestimate...as every system/configuration is different and every game slightly varying, try this instead;

Run it through several games to get an idea of the obvious areas you can upgrade.
Don't take it all dead plainly though, some of the stuff is trivial and you can ignore it.
