I dont know if this belong here(Please move this to the correct place if this dont belong here), but i have a question.

Lets say a program contained a virus.
I online virus scan(jotti or virustotal) that virused program
The Results comes out as clean.
Even thought it comes out clean, would it still have virus in it?

Although I agree with what Flyte said, but, yes. Virii are constantly being made under rapid development. A handful are made probably every day, even more at that. Which means the definitions that virus scanners use need to be updated to accommodate with the new virii that are leaked onto the net. Just because a virus scanner says it's safe, that doesn't mean it is.

An EXE can contain pretty malicious code but still come back clean even with the most basic of methods to destroy someones computer. Virus scanners work on byte array scanning methods to compare to known virus "signatures" inside of files. Certain methods to do something to a computer usually use the same set of bytes for opcodes which is what is stored in a database and used when scanning a file.

So yea.. don't believe or trust everything a program tells you. After all, its only man made Wink

Virus' can hide in programs, set a system restore point before running it if you're weary about it being infected.

Yes, if someone made it themselves and it's good.

Its best to run potential viruses in a Virtual Machine with RegMon and FileMon running.
