You do need a understanding of hexa/decimal and some ASm.
If you dont then how the hell do you know what your looking at?

Small example:

Address found during scans:
30DDF28 = 70 in value

Address found of what writes to the above address:
443831 mov [esi],eax

mov = moves value of eax into esi.
[esi] = the address found during scans
eax = 46 in hexadecimal
46 hexa converted to decimal = 70 decimal

So you can see here how knowing ASM, hexadecimal and decimal help to know what your looking at. So the real value of 70 is 46 when dealing with it in ASM.
So this means if you wanted to change that 70 you found from the game to 100, you would move 64 hexa not 100 to [ESI].
443831 mov [esi],64
The decimal out come would be 100 and that is what you would see in the game.

When you're writing AA scripts now with CE 5.4, you can actually use #x to represent a decimal number, eg.

443831:
mov [esi],#100

CE 5.4 is detected by the games you mentioned above but you could go cheat on some unprotected games for the practice.
