Cheat Engine

I've been going through tutorials learning how to work cheat engine, and I think I have the very basics down. But I have a lot of trouble finding addresses.
I wanted to test out if I knew what I was doing, so I pulled out Visual Boy Advance, and pokemon leaf green, to see if I could do anything.
At first it was pretty simple to scan and find the addresses of a pokemon's stats and adjust them.
But for some reason, I can't seem to increase the amount of money I have. I can't even find the address, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong

Setup - visual boy advance w/ pokemon leaf green rom
current money - 3382 money

1st scan - 3382, exact value, 4 bytes
- one address found [014A3681, 3382]
*go to store and buy one pokeball [minus 200 money], current money - 3182
*value of address does not update, freezing and adjusting the value has no affect in game, therefore the address is wrong
*next scan for updated money [3182] shows 0 addresses

*buy one pokeball, current money - 2982
*next scan for exact value 2982, no addresses found

**next scan, decreased value by [200], 0 addresses found

This last scan is really weird and I don't get what's happening...

new scan, exact value - 2182, 2 bytes, 410 results
* buy one pokeball - for 200 money, next scan for exact value 1982, produces one address
* [014EF0C0, 1982]
* i opened the game menu, value of address changes to 20496
*i open personal menu, value changes to 1982
*freeze address and attempt to set to 50000, but value updates to 41248
*personal menu shows total money at 41248

*go back to personal menu and it still says 41248
*buying things reduces the 1982 value, until i run out of money to buy anything, but personal menu still says 41248

So yeah, pokemon has defeated me. Anyone able to help? Or lead me in the right direction?

I'm guessing the use of the Visual Boy Advance emulator affects the values
