I have a laptop hard drive that no computer will recognize as even existing when plugged in.
I know it's been subjected to some shock, as the laptop it was in fell off a bed.
Is it possible to somehow take the data off the drive?

hmm...
I heard it might be possible to take the "platter" (the actual magnetic disc) out, and stick it in another hard drive or something, but I'm 100% sure I'd screw that up, and I sure don't have the cash to have a professional attempt it.

When you open the disk you are exposing it to everything outside, which in most cases can and will damage the platter. If you do it in a somewhat sterile room, you might get lucky and be able to get the data off before it dies.
The drive might not break after exposing it, if you're lucky, and in some cases will continue to work fine, but, I suggest against using it for anything important after you open it. Get the data off and junk it if anything. It's not hard to move the platter from one drive to another, and if possible, wear silk gloves (at least wear any type of glove to avoid finger prints and shit, silk works best), and be sure to hold the platter(s) on the outside rims, don't hold it like a plate or something, hold it like a CD with your fingers on the side.

My response wasn't for you. It was for the OP. And he mentioned moving the platter to another drive, which was what my response was about.
