yes I would go for the geforce, well thats what I use
the radeons have been known to be problematical (big word)
though I was still surprised to see a GDDR3 geforce outperforming a GDDR4 radeon,
well that just shows that radeon are still not up to the job,
just think, if they had both been GDDR4 the geforce would have pissed on the radeon even more.

My old Radeon graphics card gets very hot when I play games like Rakion(Fuck... yes). And after a period of time, my motherboard spoiled/burnt.

From the two you mentioned, go with the 8800GT, if you can find one in stock :P
But I would recommend you to wait till the December, that's when the new 8800GTS (G92) is coming out. Ranging from 300-350USD, with 650MHz for the Clock Core, 1625Mhz for the Shader Clock, 1940MHz for the Memory Clock and 128 Shader Processors. As you can see, it's a very powerful card, that should come very close or even better then the 8800 ULTRA when OC'ed. And don't forget that the Ultra costs two times more then what the new GTS will cost :D
Oh yeah, there are two version that are coming out, the 512MB and the 1GB version. Both have a redesigned cooling system so now it won't get as hot as it used to be, but comes with a price, the card will take 2 slots.
Anyway, it's your money so do whatever you want.

which means you will need an SLI motherboard to use it, so make sure that is the sort of motherboard you get if you go for that card,
sounds nice,
will get one myself early next year

Oups, I think I confused you, it doesn't use 2 slots, it uses one but it's so big that it will make your other PCI-E unusable. But hey, we'll see when it finally released. It's the only thing missing in my rig.
Here's a picture. They'll add some graphic when it will be released of course :P
