will the removal of my outdated firewall and anti virus programs leave my computer more prone to viruses?

Well, since your software is outdated, I would remove it anyway.
And it depends on your surfing habits whether or not you will be prone to "viruses".

You really don't need an Anti-virus, as long as you don't download anything suspicious you will be fine.
