Packet hacking is the idea of editing what information goes out or even in. THe idea behind it used to be for spoofing fake internet IP addys. More recently has gotten into the cheating area. For example, if you read around sites like this you'll notice many people discuss trying to edit online games for money xp ect. Only problem is you cant edit server side resources. So you send the server fake game packets. For example, we want to rank up on WoW. In theory you would capture and record the gaining of xp, which is computed locally. When a kill happens the client sends the server the xp update. 2 ways to exploit this would be 1, send bogus amount of xp for a small kill (which i did something similar on Planetside *no go*) or 2 resend the same xp gain data ie. killed 1 bore, +80xp. Dont sound like much but resend that info a few hundred times in minutes and see how fast u gain rank This is all theory I'm guessing it would take two computers on single network, one running client of game, the other acting as a "router" or net gateway. This is configured by telling the game computer that the gate way to the net is the packet computer. THis along with some network setup on the packet comp will make it where you can intercept and anylize any network date being transmitted. THis i've done, and know works. However I've never tried injecting packets like above before, nor know of any software made specifically for this.
But I'll be looking for ya and get back.
