I’m trying to use Cheat Engine in Crystal Legacy. I know the game runs slightly different to the base game due to the improvements that have been made. Whenever I use Cheat Engine in the Rom, it fails to complete the second scan - just gives 0 results. No search bar.

I’ve got it set to search ‘all’ and the first scan works but I don’t get anything with the second.
Any ideas?

It means you aren't scanning for the correct value. There's literally an infinite number of ways this could happen.
Maybe it's a bitfield (see pokemon gen II data structure on bulbapedia). Maybe the value you're scanning for gets calculated from other values and doesn't live for long.

Try an unknown initial value and changed / unchanged next value scans.

I changed the type to bytes and have managed to narrow down player money, coins and items on a number of load games but changing the value seems inconsistent - I.e. I can’t change player money to ‘999999’ for example as it will only give smaller numbers like 244. Any ideas what’s going on there?

One byte of memory can only be in 256 unique states. i.e. it can only store integers between 0 and 255.

Perhaps you should be using big endian types? See Edit -> Settings -> Extra custom types

I am starting to revist older gen rom hacks. This information is highly appreciated. Your response to check the data structurs from bulbapedia is the go-to starting point in hacking any of these roms.

I will continue trial and error, and see how CTs can be developed for some rom hacks from those gens. feel free to reach out if interesetd.
