Cheat Engine

Hey, I'm new to cheat engine and game modding in general.
So, sometimes I use Cheat Engine to read and change in-game variables, like character dialogues.

I never had any trouble changing in-game texts, but yesterday, while trying to change dialogues from an offline Japanese game (running pcsx2 emulator), I just got stuck: I couldn't find any dialogue/text from the game inside Cheat Engine. Even text that use normal characters instead of Japanese symbols.

Are there some possible common reasons for this?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, like I said, I'm pretty new to this.

What character encoding is the game using?

e.g. most pokemon games use a proprietary character encoding, maybe this one is using a proprietary encoding too.

Maybe it's stored in a compressed format and is temporarily decompressed as needed.
