For Messenger you have to do it individually per group/message

Trash af I know. This is why you should uninstall Messenger and for your phone, "use desktop version" of m dot facebook dot com to view messages (at least on Android, not sure iOS gives you this option)

If you don't wanna uninstall Messenger then go to settings-> Applications-> Messenger -> Stop Service

Or stop it from the terminal if you have a terminal emulator on your Android

Again, this is all assuming you got Android
