Cheat Engine

I have been playing the final fantasy franchise and I am on ffv so I was relieved to find a site which gave specific advice on this game (1). The HP hack works, even across save states, but that wasn't what I wanted the cheat engine for. I wanted to set my exp to a set value so I wouldn't get stronger unless I wanted to but could still fight monsters, I think being too strong makes the game boring. There already are pro action replay codes for more exp but I can't find any for zero exp.
I tried using the advice from the site below but that didn't work on exp, not even on gold but I couldn't care about that. What am I missing? Just like the other post (2) I tried changing my scan settings for MEM_MAPPED but that didn't work, the other option they suggested was searching 1 byte but only for numbers below 256. What else do I need to do?
