From what I've read, it looks like there's some sort of protection you need to get around with UWP games, but I haven't seen any discussion about it. Is it futile for a newbie to even try with UWP now?

What issue are you having ? What part exactly isn't working ? (Memory scanning, memory editing, dll injection, debugging, veh debug, lkernelmode debug, kernelmode memory access, code editing, memory cloaking, memory allocating, etc...)

Changes have no effect or change back after something updates the value in the game? In that case it's not UWP, it's just an online game, and give up

The game in question is Gimme Five.

There's tutorials out there for older versions of the game, trainers for older versions and whatnot.

I'm trying to stop a timer in the game, however when I scan starting with an unknown value and then decreased values I'm not getting anything past the second iteration.

Even if it was an online game, I should be finding a value for the display right?

not necessarily
they could have put in encryption(because there was a tutorial out that showed how to hack their online game), or instead of using a counter they now use a static endtime var and just dynamically update the screen based on endtime-systemtime

or many other reasons
