How do I cheat?

Very new to using CE. As a sort of practice I'm making a simple table for a game. I can edit resources and other things just fine, even got them pointed so they work through restarts. I know that's standard, but I'm proud.
The value of character level is strange. I manage to find it just fine, and I make doubly sure it is that, but there's some weirdness about it.
Changing it does nothing. Literally nothing. Even freezing it, the character will still gain levels. I was thinking maybe this is a value that's linked with your level but is used for other things. And your real level is a calculation done based on your total xp. But I couldn't find anything there either...I don't think at least.
Looking at what writes to it results in a billion things. Any ideas what this could be?
EDIT: This also seems to be happening with editing y co-ordinate. It assumably would happen with x too

1: Make sure it's not an online game, disconnect from the internet if you can, if it is online, give up
2: it's possible the value you found is only a display value (again, if online, give up) and in that case you need to find the actual value instead. e.g in case of EXP it's stored as XP gained since last levelup, while your XP shows total XP gained

It's not online in anyway I think. And I did try that method in the way of leveling up too, to no avail. And I'm absolutely 100% sure I have every address that has anything to do with your y co-ordinate and changing that does nothing, too. It just changes back immediately.
Freezing the y co-ord address has the effect of my character occasionally snapping to the position where the value says it should be, but only for a fraction of a second before snapping back, essentially just makign the screen "flash" at that y location for a frame. I'm thinking maybe it's just some weird thing about this game maybe.

y location is more difficult as there are many things involved that change as well
camera location, head location, arm location, feet location, or depending on the game: world location (e.g perhaps you're not jumping but is the ground just lowering under you)

It's a 2d grid based game. You're just a sprite moving grid square to grid square. Because of that I thought it might be simple. No other parts, just a sprite. And the camera location is always centered on your character.

injecting couple line of code will solve the issue, see what writes to the address. (you might find an instruction that constantly writing to the address)

There are a couple things constantly writing to it but I don't really know enough about injection to know what to do about that.
