(edited title to easily find the answer) - thread resolved.

I often get tables in Russian - i don't mind, and some folks around translate them from time to time, but i do need a hand in general. If you are not stupid you can make use of them even if you cant read anything, but i still need to be able to read the more descriptive.

Can someone explain to me how to make sure my cheat engine reads the russian encoding and actually displays the Cyrillic instead of the damned ???????

i found that when it shows ?-marks it will show properly on systems where cyrillic is the default

if it shows cyrillic when it's not the default system language, it's going to show ?'s for cyrillic users

confused? you should be

lazarus(the gui library ce makes use of) has it's quircks when it comes to different charsets, which is why widechar display has been put on hold in hexview

And here i thought i would never have to use the administrative panel in regional settings again. I thought we left it behind with IE and win xp. i guess not then.

and for the padawns:

you have to have russian as a local language.
If you have another local langauge you need to cater to for some other reason, just copy what you need from what you want to read to a smarter program and use it from there and revert back to what you need.

besides google translate should be enough to translate simplistic things like cheat table decriptions.
