Cheat Engine

Let's say I have two save files. I know that in one save the value I want to change is X, and in the second save I made a few seconds later, the value is changed to Y. What I don't know is anything about the structure of this game's save files, including which bytes represent the value I'm interested in.

What utility would let me search only for differences that match this pattern?

I'm guessing it would be one of the hex editors in the "[Library] Gamehacking Tools" sticky, or maybe something like Beyond Compare?

I can vouch for UltraEdit as well, it also a lot of features that make comparisons really easy.

Personally I'm using hex workshop for that.
For the record it should be mentioned that cheat engine can also be used to compare & edit save files (via file->open file [savegame 1], new scan, then file open file->[savegame 2], next scan).

010 Editor is very nice with great features as well for comparing various types of files in different views.
