No problem for us, only those stupid enough to use it online are at risk

The concern you should have is this line:

My issue with that is at any point in time, a game developer could turn against their community and cause every player (legit or not) to become banned on Steam.

I can honestly say any game I see that enforces this new method I will not purchase or play.
