Since your first computer, have you been disappointed or impressed with the progression of technology?
My first operating system was windows 95, and its now 20 years old. Other than aestetics, the operating system hasn't progressed much since then. I'm personally disappointed in windows, i always visioned the computer to be more revolutionary by this time when i was a kid.
But that is just me. Are you guys disappointed in the progression of technology?

| definitely impressed, but with hardware and not software. software needs to catch up to the hardware, and they both need to push each other harder

| It definitely has progressed a lot. Maybe not the operating system, but I remember having 256 mb ram and that was the most annoying thing ever playing games. I spent double on the laptop I use now but it's about 10x better in operation.

the reason why hardware has accelerated so fast is because of Foxconn. Foxconn is a chinese factory that employs over 1.5 million Chinese workers who work 100 hour work weeks with nearly empty pay checks. If all big corporations didnt outsource to China to make the goods, it would be impossible to make profits.
The idea of cheap labor cant be applied to software. To be of high quality, software has to be made by men with college degrees in a good working enviroment. You cant employ millions of chinese children like you can with a factory that produces hardware. You need knowledgable workers, and knowledgable workers aren't cheap like chinese factory labor. Thats why software development is rarely outsourced, while almost all hardware production is made overseas.

profit is the reason things haven't advanced. instead of using open-source shit, people support proprietary garbage that doesn't need to be improved because there is a monopoly on the market, and no individuals that can see the shitty code, as well as lack of knowledge from consumers in the first place being able to recognize the shitty software.
software has only become more and more bloated, and unintuitive.
also, don't guilt trip about the Chinese factories.

There's no need for guilt for Chinese factories. If factories weren't there, their economy would be in a shithole and women would have to turn to prostitution.
If nobody granted a monopoly for Microsoft in the first place, Windows wouldn't exist.

the whole idea of "licenses" in software is bogus. if you buy phone, you should own all of the phone, not just the hardware. the current digital copyright laws need to be completely rehauled.
youre right though, there are tons of garbage software out there sells no matter what. people obediently pay for the new release of Kaspersky AV every year, but every year it is the same repackaged garbage. because of the current digital copyright laws, Kaspersky and other companies can get away with extorting the consumer.

im excited for the next 10 to 20 years
algorithms are getting more advanced and applied
and some of the ideas on how the web/cloud/tech should work are changing
and the internet of things is also neat
some of Hewet Packard ideas on integrated cloud computing and the future of things like quantum computing with multiple devices always communicating with each other in a web like for example
every aircraft in the air is recording tons of data like pressure, wind ect ect ect, imagine all of that information also working with any nearby plane all over the world and every near by satellite all over the world and control center all communicating with each other all the time all avaliable to anyone

They might make 95% of the goods in your home, but their economy is a shithole. The chinese government purposefully inflates their currency so that it stays incredibly low to attract factories who are HQ'd overseas.
I feel strongly about this subject and probably could type an essay about this, but trust me, Chinese factory work is shameful.

Something to keep in mind with an OS is that the majority has already shown numerous times they do not like change. Or at least major change.
Each time Windows has tried to do something different or unique, it has backlashed and was not generally taken well. Most recently with the release of the first version of Windows 8. The change to a tile based start menu and no ability to renable the original (without mods) was not at all liked.
You can't really blame an OS for not taking more risks when each time they do it is not liked at all because people want the same old shit at the end of the day.
They can only do so much to make the windows look a little different each version and keep everyone happy at the same time, when it comes to major changes, people tend to completely disagree to it.

thats UI changes, which is understandable as you want your core audience, those not very tech savvy in windows case, to be able to continue to use the OS without much changes. but that doesn't mean features should stagnate, or even be removed like Shadow Copy
windows 10 is finally coming with native MKV, HEVC, and FLAC support. things like better scaling too for 4K. GIF in windows photo viewer would be nice, and a simple improvement (i dont know the technical reasons this isn't there). better multi-monitor support would be nice as well.
also DX12 is finally coming and looks really amazing. so things are looking up on the software side. things just need to be better optimized and respond more satisfactorily

Definitely and it is mostly good impressions
With hardware:
the leap to x64
the leap to 3D Graphics
the leap to multi core
the leap to stereoscopic rendering
the leap to parallel computing and multi multi core processing
the acceptance of virtual reality peripherals
consumer grade SSDs
With software:
the leap to 3d graphics rendering and raycast rendering
the leap to multi threading
the progress on Graphic processing algorithms
the progress on artificial inteligence
bitcoin and all crypto currencies.
the changes that are slowly being implemented with the fight against piracy by providing a better service so that customers have reasons to stick with the providers.
It has been all a blessing and I'm really thankful for being alive in this timeline. :3

Your definition of shithole: Second world country
My definition of shithole: Third world country
No factories -> Third world country
