As an experiemnt, Cartoonnetwork is placing DBZ Kai at 8:00 p.m., and One Piece at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. It's basically an experiment that if it can establish a viewership on a primetime timeslot, then it will continue being in that timeslot. If it doesn't, then this will just be a one time showing.

Its worth noting that it isn't part of the Toonami block. It's actually cutting into the Adult Swim block.

If successful, this really could make anime popular in the west again as it was in the early 2000s. If you are one of those people that want anime to succeed in America again, you might want to support it, because this is the gateway of getting anime on primetime television.

As a long time fan of anime and manga, this makes me happy because if more people are interested in this genre, then that means more releases in North America. It also makes me happy because the thought of talking to people in person about anime I am passionate about is something I really haven't been able to do due to a lack of viewership amongst the common person.

But of course, that's just my own agenda. There are probably lots of people like brolock who don't want a new influx of anime viewers in online communities. I agree with that. I mean, the current online anime community is very mature as most of us are products of the anime boom of the late 1990s into the early 2000. A new demographic of 12 year olds who only watched a few episodes of DBZ raiding reddit and other communities definitely might be shit, but that is what happens with any established genre that generates young viewership.

But look how far anime has came in the last 4 years. Crunchyroll, Toonami and now primetime slots for anime did not exist just a few years ago. I definitely believe anime in the west is on the "up arrow" trend.

yes, anime is becoming more popular in the west. but as a whole anime as a genre is becoming shitty, and STILL not being taken seriously as an art form. showing DBZ kai and one piece won't help that.

we need more things like Miyazaki movies and Akira. also I wish cell animation would come back because new anime looks like shit.

me and my friends talk anime often, got one to watch Madoka and some other shit. the three of us have watched anime since we first new each other when we were 12, and would watch FLCL, FMA, Eureka 7 on toonami, and those are great and definitely more stuff like that needs more attention in the west for it to be taken seriously. also its great they showed the Evangelion movie on Toonami a couple times, they should really air the whole show.

I just want more innovation in anime, and I haven't seen anything spectacular that is a new IP in a while. Steins;Gate and Madoka were really good, but those were in 2011 so theyre a bit old now

and online communities like reddit dont really help anime be taken seriously. and as much as i love 4chan, /a/ is a really shitty board with really bad taste.

Actually, Akira and other extremely high budget anime films of the 80s are part of the reason why anime today sucks. In the 80s, anime production companies were actually putting huge budgets in their films. Akira was a complete failure, with a budget of 1.1 billion yen, but yet only making 0.75 billion off of it. Akira didn't even break even.

Movie failures like Akira established the "safer" business model for anime production companies. Simple anime productions such as Dragon Ball could have much more profit with very little budget.
