Okay so I have no problem scanning or modifying things with cheat engine on my android device. So I was curious how does one go about finding any type of pointers on an android device? I attempt to use the debugger to find what is accessing reading or writing to a specific address on the phone yet no results ever pop up.

What are the methods used by most to find any pointers on a phone or tablet. I have searched long and hard for any information on the topic. And I have never been just stumped like this before. I have many years under my belt in both coding and hacking, on multiple levels. But the lack of understanding of the android OS has finally stumped me. I haven't done much coding for phones or tablets short of using unity.

I would think that finding pointers on phones would be simple, yet I am clearly wrong.

Are there settings I need to tweak in the ce settings menus to be able to debug and find out what is accessing addresses or how they are being written to? Or is this going to be a damn near impossible feat, and should I just look into modding the apk? I would prefer not to mod the apk as some of my hacks for the game I am working on, would not be possible to just mod into the client.. I was considering using signature scanning routines to just "work around" not being able to find the pointers on an android. Which by all means in theory should work. Since I know what is around some of the offsets I need to modify, but I would prefer working with pointers as it is much easier and more reliable than a wild stab in the dark signature seek, with wildcards in spots.

I have not found any discussions on this topic so I figured I would start a new one and see what the community could drum up in ideas or if I may be doing something wrong and need to simply change a setting or install some sdk. So has anyone got any experience in looking for static addresses in smartphones/tablets? I can not seem to fathom how this is all done since phones drop certain portions of memory when new activities are scheduled. I am lost for ideas, and can't come up with a simple solution. Does anyone have any input for me? I would love to get a nice discussion going here.

debugging seems to depend on linux build and/or soc. e.g my old asus tablet with nvidia Tegra cpu works, while my newer samsung galaxy tab 4 (qualcomm soc) never reacts to the breakpoint (gdbserver can't set hardware watchpoints either, so i'm blaming the tablet here)

i've never looked into pointers for it, but it's likely it won't work if it is a pure java based game, and if android(dalvik or art) implements it with compressed pointer fields enabled as well (if it's not perhaps the pointerscan could find something, but will need an big commonmodules. txt list to filter out certain not so static regions, like dalvik-heap)

for native code games, like angry birds it may be possible though. see http://www.cheatengine.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=568068 for an example on angry birds

debugging java itself might be an option as well, but may require replacing the libdvm or art library with a version that doesn't care about security, and that would be very device dependant
