Anyway to select a process without switching out of it?

I was trying to change some data of a game with cheat engine, but only to find out that once I switch out, whether by using Alt+Tab combination, Windows Start Key, or the customized hot key for CE to popup/hide, I can't switch back into the game any more. (Seems the game is preventing a switching out.) So is there any mean to select a process without switching out? Maybe a hot key to select the currently focused program window? Or the currently focused full-screen program?

You can setup a custom hotkey with lua and use getForegroundProcess and openProcess to do that, but how would you check the results of scans?
