If you are crashing then use a different debugger type, or breakpoint type.
Edit: I see that the game is using VAC. Try using VEH with Int3 breakpoints. That works fine for me.
Before you try getting a pointer to something, you should see if it actually is something you want a pointer to (e.g: does changing it have the desired effect?).
