Cheat Engine

I'm currently trying to find a money cheat for the game Mercenary Kings. I use the steps to find a float with an unknown initial value, and eventually find the value I'm looking for after a few steps. Upon editing the value to 500 (just a test value to give me $500), I find that in-game my money is now zero. The value in Cheat Engine still appears to be 500, but obviously does not match the in-game value. Can anyone explain this to me, either specific to the game or just generally?
