As far as I know, rom files are just a bunch of data and opcodes.
Ideally, I'd be able to use it to inject (or at least replace) assembly in the rom and have it still be playable on the original console. I can't look for assembly that accesses or writes to variables even after finding a location in RAM because the emulator's the one interpreting the ROM and moving shit around. How can this help me find areas in the ROM to modify?
I think I'm close to figuring this out but need some of this cleared up. Finally, does anyone have any good romhacking links that involve cheat engine?
Roms can be manipulated just like anything else. The problems that usually arise often correlate with the emulator that is being used. Since some emulators have built-in debuggers and the like, the memory is shared and/or inaccessible...prohibiting proper debugger attachment (which is necessary for injection and advanced scripting etc.). Writing a trainer for SNES is a lot easier than writing a trainer for PSX - because of emulator availability.
I have written trainers for NES, SNES and SEGA Genesis, but for nothing else. Not to say that it is not possible...I just have not tried. I did try PSX, but never found a viable workaround for injection.
