they have unique features, doesn't mean they have to have a soul though
in fact, the unique features are probably evolutionary to make us not want to eat them, such as being frail or frightening, or resembling human children such as kittens and puppies do, but thats more of human selective breeding them than nature. for 1000s of years we bred cats and dogs to look kawaii, and i think we've succeeded

Yeah, they definitely have a distinguished look.
I'm able to recognize my black cat from other black cats because their eyes and ears just the shape of their heads are different.
Also yeah, cats imitate sounds of human babies because when a human (parent) hears a babies cry it triggers something.

Although I don't 100% agree with you (a lot of the features are probably for mating stuff, too), I think your comment is very insightful. To wit, I've read studies where they've shown that all species have a soft spot for young animals - something to do with oversized eyes, as I recall. I've also seen on Animal Planet or something how foxes quickly evolved to have predominantly black and white colors when bred for tameness. So, it's not too huge of a leap to suggest that there's a correlation between what we consider to be kawaii and other traits that we consider beneficial (being easily house-trained, having juicy, delicious meat, etc).

some animals that were separated from other family members then reunited ten years later remember each other according to some studies. i want to say they used dolphins or whales, but i don't remember.

Dolphins also give each other names.
