If it suddenly stopped working then it's not drivers, sounds like a hardware issue.
Is the laptop still under warranty?

Reinstall mainbaord drivers & wlan-drivers and pray your physical button will work again.

You could try system restore.
I had a problem like this once that was caused by a program. To fix it I had to install and uninstall the program two times, but system restore would have worked too I guess.

will try this tomorrow morning. currently the phyiscal button to turn on/off the wireless connection not only doesn't turn it on/off but it opens up windows media player.

Is there a switch anywhere on the laptop to turn the WiFi card on and off? It might be you accidentally flipped that switch when moving the laptop around, which turned turned off the card completely. Often the button is only a hotkey that triggers an event in the OS to turn WiFi on or off. If the card is switched off, this will not do anything.
