im helping a freind fix his laptop. an issue apeared out of nowhere...

so his mouse and keyboard (both usb) function perfectly no matter what port he uses.

but both of our external hard drives and 3 usb flash drives (all different brands) do not read. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling universal serial bus, and updating the drivers. i have scanned for virus's. and registry errors. i have tried everything i can think of (btw microsoft fixit is stupid)

what should i try next.
