Okay, so, I'm fairly new to cheat engine but I've (for the most part) figured out the essentials (at least for what I use it for). I can find values, change them, freeze them, and recently learned to find pointers (through scanning, mostly) and save those for future use.

Finding pointers is useful and all, but the way I'm doing it I have to find the XP for every hero in my game, then find the pointers to all of those, and if one of them dies, it's back to the drawing board! (Think the Total War games)

Here's my question though:

I've seen tables on this website where people are able to change addresses based on what you have selected in the game. For example, in the Total War games, you click on General A you will see General A's XP in the table. If you click General B, it changes to General B's XP in the table.

So I was wondering how exactly this is done. I'm willing to try to learn, but I have no idea where to start here... Is there a value that simply maintains the XP of whoever is selected? Is there some manner of code in the table that swaps the addresses when you click?

Also, my apologies if this is an over-discussed question, but I wasn't sure how to word it so searching came up with not-so-helpful results.

Most likely it's a code injection in the code that renders (reads) the stats of the currently selected general to the screen and there store the address of that general in a known location that other pointer paths can use as a base

Or it's a simple pointerscan result. Select a general, scan for it's address. Select another general and scan for that address.
repeat, restart, reboot, and rescan each time and if you're lucky you will have a pointerpath that points to the currently selected general
