Hello all, recently I've been trying to share my laptop's wireless connection with my desktop through the laptop's Ethernet adapter to the PC's. It wont work if the two are plugged directly into each other, however will if their is a router in between the connection.
While attempting to share a connection with no router no lights blink at all on either my pc or laptop around their ethernet ports; its almost as if no current is running through the wire without the router.

I just tried this with my desktop & laptop & it worked fine. I don't know how you did it but my steps:

Share wi-fi connection on laptop
Plug ethernet cables between desktop <-> laptop
Laptop changed its cable IP to a pre-configured one (192.168.137.1)
Desktop used DHCP and got IP address 192.168.137.79, default gateway 192.168.137.1.

Voilá.

It sounds like you let your router be the DHCP, are you possibly setting static ip addresses?

One thing you could try is bridging the wireless and wired network connections on the laptop. Simply mark both of them in "Network Connections" and select Bridge Connections.

Wire them up and go on the laptop and bridge the connections. Simple.
