My 320GB HDD does not seem to be working anymore so I've decided to buy an SSD. The question: Is there a noticeable performance difference between mainstream SSDs and high-performance SSDs?
I'm currently planning to buy an OCZ Agility 3 120GB Sata 3.0 6Gbps
What can you recommend for me?

The difference between the "main-stream" and "high-end" would depend on Read/Write speeds. The trickiest part of choosing an SSD is the bang to buck ratio.
Just note, The largest difference in SSD or HDD comes from installing your OS on the SSD. I'd gauge about a 30% increase from the change of Read/Write speeds in the SSD to HDD when it is put on the Sata III series SSDs.
The Agility 3 is a good pick honestly. But I would actually recommend the 60GB Agility 3 Series, and install your OS on it. Then use the HDD for Data and games. You'd save around $30-$40. Its always better for gaming rigs to contain their OS on a separate SSD then the Data/Games to push for maximum results.
Let me know how it turns out!

Thanks, I just ordered an Agility 3 a few hours ago.
Would the games still run fast with this configuration?
OS - SSD
Data/Games - 7,200 RPM HDD
And will this run faster?
OS - SSD
Data/Games - another SSD

Yes, naturally, anything with an SSD (Sata III) will be faster then an HDD.
So if you had 2 SSDs, you could separate the Games/Data from the OS for maximum performance. You will be better off having your SSD holding your OS whilst your HDD holds Data and games, as oppose to the other way around. I only suggested using the SSD/HDD mix because I figured you weren't going to buy 2 SSDs. Although, in a perfect world, you'd have 2 SSDs for both Data and OS usage.

A general thumbrule though is that the larger the SSD, the better performance and longer lifetime. Also games that have load screens every now and then should also be thrown on the SSD considering it'll load much much faster then.
All data storage like movies, mp3s, pictures and so on should go on another drive though.

You get optimum performance when you run your OS on the SSD alone, and not alongside intensive operations, like running a game in the same SSD. While your logic may be true, I told him to get a smaller SSD because he does not need 120GB for his OS. And if he was to buy the 120GB for his OS he would be compelled, like many, to use it as the primary SSD for both the OS and resource intensive operations.

I just realized that all my data are around 1.2TB so I'm going with SSD + HDD

| Sorry for necro, does cheat engine scan faster when on an SSD? or is it just gonna wear it out? Thx for reply.

OCZ had a really bad stretch in the SSD market. But the Agility 3 fixed all that and is a pretty good drive. Personally I like the Samsung 830 Pro is worth the extra few bucks for a 128GB drive, though.
I use a disk drive for bulk storage, and I cheat at moving programs between the drives by installing everything in sandboxie and just copying the sandboxes back and forth when I want to move games between drives without messing about with the registry. I've not seen anyone else doing this but it's really effective.

| I just ordered a samsung pro series, they seem to be the most highly praised for high speeds that maintain under pressure.

You're going to find the best performance is when you have a big enough SSD to fit your OS and all programs on startup and/or could benefit from faster data retrieval. Because if you have your OS on an SSD and then a bunch of programs that open on startup on your HDD, you're still going to get bogged down.

| Samsung 840 pro are the best. Samsung makes their own tricore controller onboard for the fastest read and write possible. I think their SSD currently have the fastest speeds, or damn near it.
