How do I cheat?

Hey I am new to trainers, and I can't seem to figure out how to use them. My games are running when i apply the trainers. But nothing happens. For instance, one of the trainers has hotkeys on the numpad, ingame i press the hotkeys to activate the cheat but nothing happens. Any suggestions that i should try or advice. Am i doing this wrong?? Please help!

Your version of the game must be the same as when that trainer was created

Also, make sure to open the trainer AFTER you have started the game, just to be sure.
