Add a hue to the whites and reduce the contrast maybe?
Also darken everything overall?

Yeah man, it's more annoying to see someone try to follow rules and end up generic looking than just do what they think looks good.
In the end it will be obvious if it looks good or bad so you can work from there.
If you're indecisive about it being good or bad then it's already better than 90% of the shit out there produced by goddamn hipster artists who insist their art is a work of god channeling through them or something they saw in a trip that has meaning that excuses its profound lack of aesthetics.
