I currently have a biostar A780L mobo, which is AM2+/AM3 socket.
I want to upgrade my cpu and mobo, so I was looking at a phenom II 965, but then I saw the bulldozer zambezi for only $90 more, which has double the cores and easily hits 4.5ghz according to reviews.
I realize having the speed spread out over more cores means less speed per core, and therefor less speed total for games that are limited to 2 or 4 cores, but the reviews still say it outperforms the 965 regardless.
The problem is that it's AM3+, so I'd be getting a new mobo, and I don't really have a lot of cash to spend, I just wanted to take advantage of some winter sales.
So is it fine if I stick with a phenom II?
If so here's the build I have in mind:
Current PSU (I believe 550w, I'll have to check)
Current hdd's (5tb or so total)
Current mobo (A780L)
New ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231489
New cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727
New gpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130613
As for the gpu, I was reading benchmarks and reviews and the 570 seems to be the most cost effective.
I'm looking to get maximum gaming power, and it is $80 off from newegg right now.
Is there any other ~$250 gpu I should get instead that would give better performance?
Thanks!

Try looking at the GTX 660 (not the TI) i think its newish and its cheaper by like 20 bucks i think it outperforms or is at least the same with newer architecture.

Put simply:
What's the best <$300 gpu out there?
The 570 is like $80 off but I don't mind spending a bit more for a big difference in performance.
Also low power usage would be great because I don't really want to upgrade my psu.
edit: If I HAD to upgrade my psu, would 680w be enough for this rig?
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817148022
edit: at this rate I'm just going to fan the new gpu and stick with my 9800 gt, I'll just get the 965 and more ram for now.

My build was very similar, but slightly less powerful. Regardless, It can run games like Mafia II, Sleeping dogs, and Crysis 2 at full graphical settings.
I have that same brand of RAM, but only 4 GB. Don't need much more.
I have that Zambezi processor you mentioned earlier (fx 4170) And it DOES reach 4.5ghz easily. Great buy.
And I have a GTX 560 which might get outdated very soon, but it does it's job on everything I've thrown at it flawlessly. Probably going to have to replace it soon enough though.

More powerful
More video ram
Same price
You would be crazy not to.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7870-review-benchmark,3148-7.html
GTX 570 does better at smaller res, but as you can see the 570 suffers past 1280 x 720. You would be crazy man.
Also also, this is a review of the non GHZ edition and the card I linked is GHZ, so expect it to be even faster. |
Thanks to both of you.
I already ordered the ram, I think I may still get the 965 because it's the best AM3 cpu and only $100, so when I feel like upgrading my mobo and psu as well I'll go for a better cpu and probably the 7870.

If you are getting 7870 look at the 660 TI it performs better than the 7870. I have it and its a good card. But i think its more expensive. cant remember

| If you want to keep your current mobo, you can't use more than 8GB of RAM according to biostar's site/specs for mobo.

Right but it was still a good deal and these sticks will last for a while.

Actually my mobo only supports ddr2 LOL.
I guess I'll be getting a mobo instead of headphones.
Question: If I get a new AM3+ mobo, will I still be able to use my AM2+ phenom I?
Or will I have to upgrade my cpu also?
And would a zambezi or vishera be a good budget choice for under $200?

The 8320 is $10 cheaper but somewhere between 5-10% faster than the 8150. Not a noticeable difference, but a slight increase.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6396/the-vishera-review-amd-fx8350-fx8320-fx6300-and-fx4300-tested | Try 30 bucks cheaper bro. The prices are off. 8320 is 179.99 and the 8350 is 219.99. The 8350 stock is on par with the i7 3770k. I would go with the 6300 or stick to a phenom II x4 965. The 8350 really excels at multithreading but is still hindered by single threading apps.
As far as motherboards go, stick with 900+ chipset. 970/980/990

Ok so which is a better deal?
The 8350 is $220 and the 8150 is $160 with a coupon right now (normally $190).
If I were to just go with the 8150 and save myself $60 would I notice a huge difference in power?
Gonna be using it for gaming, 3d rendering, video editing, other multimedia stuff.
