I just recently downloaded TF2, anyone care to explain what role each class does(including in different game modes as well)?

Probably best to play and find out yourself. I'd just stay away from spy initially. There isn't really any penalty or anything for losing. It's all casual. I'd start on Attack/Defend too

Totally generic breakdown that applies to most pub servers but isn't 100% true for everyone:

Scouts are annoying fuckers that run really fast and deal lots of damage if they get close to you, they have low health though, so they're good for ambushes or running intel to/from bases.
Soldiers are slow and have lots of health, they deal lots of damage with the rocket launcher but since rockets move slowly it's generally easy to dodge them.
Pyros are average speed and health, they deal lots of damage at close range with the flame thrower.
Demomen are average speed and health and deal lots of damage like the soldier but make use of time-delayed attacks, like launching pipe bombs that either explode on hitting an enemy or rolling around and exploding (useful for getting enemies from around corners), or sticky bombs that can be manually detonated when an enemy is near them.
Heavies have tons of health and are slow as fuck, they deal ok damage at close to medium range, but their advantages with the minigun is that it can continuously shoot for ages without reloading, and also since they have so much max health a good medic buddy can make them almost impossible to kill without good teamwork. They are basically human tanks.
Engineers are average speed and health, they are pretty weak damage wise, but they can build stuff like sentries that shoot at enemies, dispensers that give teammates health/ammo, and teleporters than can get respawning teammates back to the frontlines more quickly.
Medics are tricky, their base health is average and most of their weapons are weak, but since they have regenerative health you have an advantage over almost any other enemy if you need to 1v1 them. Medics mostly just heal other players but if you have good timing and aim you can use the crossbow to snipe some players long range and ambush unaware enemies close range with your melee. If a medic spends enough time healing teammates in a single life they can fully charge their "ubercharge" which basically lets them make a teammate invincible for several seconds. Also they have average speed.
Snipers are pretty much the same as in any other game: you get a sniper rifle that lets you instakill anyone with a headshot from extremely long range. They also have an ok backup weapon that deals ok damage, but it doesn't hold much ammo and has to reload often, so it's only good for fending off enemies that are trying to catch you camping. Also they have average health and speed.
Spies are average health and speed, they have a revolver that is slow and weak but doesn't have falloff (does the same amount of damage regardless of range, like the sniper rifle) and can be used to pick off damaged enemies. Their melee weapon does the least amount of damage of all melee weapons unless you can attack an enemy from behind, in which case it's a backstab and instantly kills them. How do you get behind them unawares? The spies have magical watches that can make them invisible to enemy players.

edit: as for gamemodes there's capture the flag, every one knows what that is.
Attack/defend, where red team has a base with a few check points and blue has to capture each check point in sequential order within the time limit to win.
There's capture point which is similar except that both teams have bases and then there's a no man's land point in the middle. One team has to capture the middle point and then capture the enemies base. This gamemode can go on the longest since it's basically a tug of war.
There's payload, where one team has to escort a slow-ass cart with a bomb on it down some train tracks to the enemy base, while the other team tries to push it back.
There's also payload race, where both teams have bombs on train tracks and the first one to get it to the other side wins.
There's king of the hill, a map has a single center check point and the first team to capture and hold it for a total of three minutes wins.

That's it for official game modes.

Honestly, I'd recommend you play for yourself, check your surroundings and build off of that instead of taking advice from people like Cryoma.

what cryoma posted seemed entirely reasonable. i am waiting for konr to jump in and try to show how big his tf2 cock is, though, and rage at cryoma

I didn't see any real issues when I gave it a glance. I was just using Cryoma as an example as I could be missing something, and he has a habit of leaving stupid comments when he tries to explain something.

Most of what Cryoma said was right for pubs, however some details were not.

Quote:
Snipers are pretty much the same as in any other game: you get a sniper rifle that lets you instakill anyone with a headshot from extremely long range. They also have an ok backup weapon that deals ok damage, but it doesn't hold much ammo and has to reload often, so it's only good for fending off enemies that are trying to catch you camping. Also they have average health and speed.

You should mention that the sniper rifle only insta-kills if you charge it up by staying scoped in for a while. This makes you really slow and easy to headshot/backstab/whatever.
Quote:
Soldiers are slow and have lots of health, they deal lots of damage with the rocket launcher but since rockets move slowly it's generally easy to dodge them.

Soldiers are among the fastest classes in the game if you play it right. Because they have a rocket launcher you can actually rocket jump. If you learn how to do it effectively and learn where all the healthpacks are in all of the maps you can be quite mobile without killing yourself. Also the whole idea is to get close up to people before you shoot rockets and to shoot them at the floor (for splash damage) so that they are no easy to dodge.
Quote:
Medics are tricky, their base health is average and most of their weapons are weak, but since they have regenerative health you have an advantage over almost any other enemy if you need to 1v1 them. Medics mostly just heal other players but if you have good timing and aim you can use the crossbow to snipe some players long range and ambush unaware enemies close range with your melee. If a medic spends enough time healing teammates in a single life they can fully charge their "ubercharge" which basically lets them make a teammate invincible for several seconds. Also they have average speed.

This is all wrong mostly. They do not have an advantage against anyone 1v1 and they should not be thought of as a class that should ambush or try to fight unless it's absolutely necessary. The crossbow is good if the person you're healing is stuck near enemies and you want to heal him while running away (the further you are away the more healing the arrow does to your teammate, and also the more damage to an enemy) and the ubercharge is the most important thing in the entire game and provides a pushing mechanic. Ubercharge makes both you and a person you are healing invulnerable and you can also switch it between players by healing them quickly in succession, because the ubercharge takes a second to fade from a person after you give it to them. This will however lower the time your ubercharge lasts. It can also be switched out for the kritzkrieg which is basically the same thing except you can't multi-uber with it and instead of vulnerability it gives the person you're healing critical hits for a short amount of time. It charges faster than the uber does and it's good for getting a quick advantage when both medics died at the same time by using it when you respawn and surprising the enemy. Also the medic is actually the fastest class in the game after the scout, and is not average speed.

cba copy pasting it but the revolver is also not weak or slow. The problem with it is that it has a spread when you fire it too quickly, but if you're at a relatively close range and you fail a backstab you can quite easily kill light classes or even heavy classes (soldier/demo).

If I was going to give you any advice at all it would be to not fall for the unlock gimmick. While some are kinda fun, the only really excellent ones are the medic unlocks. The default loadout is by far more effective in almost every instance for every class.
