Now, shortly after I assembled my computer (Thanks "Dark Bite!"), I realized my cpu has been having issues with heat. It's usually about 30 degrees Celsius before I turn it on. However, after hours of playing games, it raises to temperatures up to 61 degrees. I usually don't let it raise anymore, since I'm afraid of having any issues. I checked my voltages, I have enough power to run everything in my build; CPU fan runs at max speed, GPU fan work superb (I actually have no problem with my GPU at all).

My system's an open build (No case; Everything is out on my desk) therefore, I have superior air flow.

Since my gpu fan work fine, I'm starting to think it's the thermal compound. The fan came with some compound already greased on, however, I really doubt it's enough (I left it out for a few days while waiting for my parts) so I think some if not most dried up.

What do you guys think? Is it a problem with my stock cooler or compound? Should I go buy some and add it to my fan?

1. theres nothing wrong with 61c (after playing for fucking hours with no case)
2. open case are you a fucking retard how is that superior airflow? there is NO airflow, its just a fucked up mess, you might as well not even use fans
3. why did you leave it out? why would you open your shit if youre not ready to assemble it

so heres what you do
1. buy a fucking case, they exist for a reason bro
2. buy some thermal compound since you fucked yours up
3. remove old and apply new, should be fine
if youre not overclocking , stock coolers are fine

lol.. i would normally complain about you being a total fucking asshat, but that's good advice. I don't understand how an open system is bad for cooling. have you heard of rack casing? Yeah, I'm going to buy some new compound tomorrow, and maybe if it's even worth buying a case
I'll do that later.

61c is pretty normal, heck, even pentium 4 prescotts run on 80c average (90c was common under games).

Anyways hows it managing games?

It's so great. It fucking tears through everything I've tried with ultra settings. I mean, for 480 Bucks it does what I need better than I payed. I've tried a few games though, Skyrim, from dust, EYE Divine cybermancy, Smite, Shogun II and like a few others run on highest with some aa and stuff. I haven't recorded the fps for any but there's no lag, So I assume they all run at ~50 to 60 fps.

I read that tjmax values for 4170 is 60 degrees with stock cooling.. I'm almost sure I should fix my thermal compound since there wasn't much on there when I put it on. But Idunno

I get around 50 degrees, likely because I have a mATX build and a Phenom II X4 970 overclocked a good bit

its bad because there isnt airflow, and your shit isn't being protected. theres a reason why having a case and leaving the side open is bad, without any case at all its even worse, the heat isn't being transfered away in a streamline manner, its just kind of going everywhere, and unless you keep your house really cool and have a fan on your pc then its going to be worse than having a decent sized case with stock fans, it makes it so fresh air can easily come in cool from the fans and hot air can be pushed out.

cases are one of the cheapest parts, so you might as well get one and try it yourself, get new compound and compare the 2. getting a new cooler for your cpu wouldnt help very much if you dont have a case anyways.

again theres a reason cases exist, and why you dont see people with powerful systems just leaving their shit out. besides you most likely will never need to upgrade your case if you get a decent one, so theres no reason to not get one, you can also add more fans to a case to keep it even cooler (liquid cooling is overrated)

@hero: 61c is normal when you have no case and game for a few hours straight
