Protip: 7970 with a small overclock is stronger than a 6990. Go for a 6950 and unlock the bios at least. 6970 is weak sauce now.

Also keep in mind that AMD drivers are trash. In this chart the numbers are close. Imagine if AMD somehow made a good driver? It be chaos for Nvidia.

So protip:AMD GPU are better, they just make shit drivers that slow it down.
