The stuff in the red square was the original US settlements, the stuff in the green squares was established later, but the name mid-west was kept because political geographers are stuck up asswipes.

| My best guess would be the fact that originally we settled on the East coast of the country, then gradually moved west, making a lot of area "West", however, there's a large chain of mountains that further divide the country, which I assume would be how they separate mid-west from west.
