Don't feel bad at all about that, the 280 is still pretty powerful. If your power supply can handle it, I'm pretty sure the 280 is still as good as at least a $175 card today.

Yeah, I still use a 5870 which was a whopper of a card when it came out, and the 280 should be about as powerful. The 5870 still holds up great with today's games.
