I have the required specifications, but it says I fail the minimum. Do I need to have a certain graphics card to play this game at optimal performance?

| You don't have a graphics card at all, and the 1.7gb is vram which doesn't count but reads as ram anyway.

I've never really learned much about the hardware, please enlighten me.

Go buy a graphics card. Or, if you're using a laptop, buy a laptop that isn't shit.

"Intel HD Graphics" basically means your intel processor has a little partition that can be designated for graphics, so all you're doing is putting extra stress on your processor.
Even with an overclocked i7 it still won't be that great for gaming.
Since you don't have a physical graphics card with physical ram, it uses virtual ram instead, which is like a small partition on your hard drive that persistently updates like ram. This is far inferior, even if you're using a solid state disk or flash drive, than dedicated ram.

So from what I do know, you can't just shove a graphics card into shit; you need a processor and a power source capable of working with it, as well as cooling depending on the amount of power being put in? I got an Acer desktop, it looks smaller than most desktop computers I see.

| Processor doesn't matter it's the motherboard that has to be compatible, and the power supply has to have the right voltage etc.

Basically build yourself a pc if you want to play games.

| Borrowed a friend's account to play Dead Space, and I don't get it, it's running fine on normal settings. TF2 is doing great at max settings.

Planned to buy it but didn't know if I could run it. Didn't even know my friend would be willing to share his account, it didn't come to me.
