It will feature no images, entirely Lucida Console, ASCII art, and I will be banking entirely on me being able to write words that people will want to read.

What does /rs/ think?

Why do I even need ads, how much could it possibly cost to run a website with no pictures?

websites aren't divided into those with and those without images. Sure you could pay for hosting with inferior bandwidth and shit but eh.

That's what I meant, you could reload the website thousands of times and it doesn't matter because there's nothing that requires substantial bandwidth. So no need to pay very much, right?

Idk. I figured the end goal is to make money. Otherwise what's the point. And yes I don't believe in open source software. I see it as something other people decide to do that wastes their time. Given you could use the same time to code and make money. I only do it cause it looks good on your cv

I guess the end point is to make a website that fullfills my love for old fashioned websites and an outlet for all the writing that I do about various topics, if there's someone to read it.

I don't think that you'll have a wide audience.
Ascii art is...meh.

Then, what do I do? What kind of content is required to make a "successful" website.

Also sui ascii art isn't the entire point, I just like websites with that look.

First of all you need to figure out which kind of audience it is that you want to appeal to.
Then you need to see if you can generate content that will catch the attention of said audience and if you will be able to generate more content in the same category of the same quality.
THEN you can start thinking about ads, donations and any kind of generated revenue.

As I said before, I did not have making any money in mind here.

I'm not even sure what kind of audience I'm trying to get, but this idea just happened to pop into my head and I really like it.

I don't know if a text based website could work but it would be fun to try.
