Not really game hacking related, but games that are locked at 30fps, 20fps, w/e, how does one go about removing this limitation without access to the source code? What about resolution? Is there something specific to look for within the engine of the game?
I'm not really looking for a speedhack, but I guess that is essentially what it is.

Most of the time when an engine is locked to a FPS limit it will cause the game to run entirely different if you uncap it. Most of the time it will cause the game (in whole) to speed up and run extremely fast making it unplayable.
You'll need to find where the game is handling the main loop for rendering and adjust how its limiting the FPS. A lot of old games did this within their message pump. Take a look at something like this:

Thats one way to limit FPS.
As for the resolution it depends on the engine being used. If its Direct3D, you can adjust the CreateDevice params to use the backbuffer size you want. (You will also have to adjust any Reset calls on the device to use the new size too.)
