You won't need 8GB of RAM, get 4 unless you have the spare money. You could also definitely find a cheaper case, it doesn't have to be fancy unless you're on an actual budget. 500W will do fine for a PSU for that. I'd suggest a different cpu cooler, but iirc the x4 came with a pretty decent one (heat pipes with a large heatsink?)

ok so I put everything together and it booted up, seems to be working fine. haven't installed windows yet though, still have to back up stuff from old hdd.

however since I plugged it in, there's this high pitched noise coming from the motherboard (i know it's the motherboard bc the noise starts when the board has power to it and stops when it's off -green light on mb is off) .. i'm guessing this is a capacitor that's makioing the noise. is this a sign that it's going to die soon? is it worth RMAing the board? its bareable but if it's going to cause problems in the future I'm just gonna rma the board.

The whine you're hearing is most likely from your power supply, It's a coil whine. You can try to do is spread the load of your device to different connectors. Such as don't use all of the SATA connectors from a single cable.

The other possibility could be the PSU can't keep up with the demand of power from yoru graphic card. Try a different PSU or graphic card.

quite sure it is a mb because even when I unplug the gpu the whine still occurs. not really bothering me at this point as I have this other bigger problem..
basically all I can think of that's causing it is a bad hdd and what i'm experiencing right now is super sluggish windows, like just opening the start menu could cause it to sort of freeze up (not like completely like I can still move the mouse and what not) for a good 30-1min? I was thinking possibly the psu can't handle the build so I swapped it with an older 7800gt but it changed nothing.

oh and I can't set my RAM to 1600mhz.. it just won't boot. Set the ram voltage to 1.65v and manually set to 1600mhz and it just hangs when booting and evantually ends up with a bsod. not that concerned about this atm - just want to get windows up and running without it freezing over the smallest things. I had a problem with it running @ 800mhz but that was just bc of the cool and quiet setting and I disabled it so It's running faster now but still freezes constantly. i'm thinking why windows is running slow could be because of this old hdd. (...although I'm hoping it's not bc hdd prices are crazy right now)
any suggestions? thanks

PS: I'm not using the PSu linked above, I ended up getting the 500w corsair.

here's what I ended up getting:
asus m5a97 mobo
kingston hyperx 8gb ram
zalman z9 case
asus 7800 gt(in pc atm)/8800gts(was in)
500w corsair psu
250gb caviar se (recycled from old pc)

nevermind...... it was the balanced power savings option in windows that kept throttling my cpu down to 800mhz even though I turned off cool n quiet in the bios lol

Btw a am3 chip can't boot 1600mhz mem without overclocking your fsb.
