Yeah it was probably an NPC, but most likely not another player.

ok first was the server in offline mode? if so anyone can join as any name. also hacked clients can easily do this. probably not notch.

Server on offline mode.

You log on offline mode using username notch.

Clients still fetch skin/cape data from minecraft.net regardless of server being on offline mode.
