My mom's laptop won't connect because it's saying it has the same IP as another on our network. We have 3 (1 desktop, 2 laptops) -- my laptop works fine and so does the desktop but her's doesn't. How can I resolve this issue?

Start the system and try the following first:
Click Start -> Run -> cmd (command prompt)
And try using:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
If your network is using DHCP it should handle acquiring the new IP address automatically.
If you choose to use a static IP at an earlier time you'll need to tell the system to use a dynamic IP rather then the static one for the card that you are attempting to connect with. You can do that by going into Control Panel and locating 'Network Connections' or 'Networking and Sharing Center'.
On Windows 7 there will be a link on the left to 'Change Adapter Settings'. Find your device in that window, right click it and choose properties. Choose 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' from the list of items and click 'Properties'.
Make sure that on the General tab that 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is marked and same for the DNS server info at the bottom.
On Windows XP you can find all this in the Network page. It's the same thing pretty much once you find your device in the network page.
(This is all assuming you are using a DHCP enabled network/router.)

I'll try your 2nd suggestion after I shower thanks. I tried the command prompt ones from Google (same as yours) and it wouldn't work because it's not connected

When I try your second suggestion (CP -> Network Connections -> etc.) on the "Change Adapter Settings" step after I click that link the window shows nothing

Access your router / modem settings and make DHCP is enabled. Should be a wee bit similar to this in settings:

I'm at my grandparents and I don't know their password... they probably don't either Thanks though, but I'll just reformat her laptop since she's got everything moved almost anyway.

Do you have wireless? Is that ip used in a device that is possibly not yours?

Plug the laptop in directly to the router then do the ipconfig to reset it

You folks realize you are telling a child how to mess with his grandparent's equipment, right?
Anyway, set aside ethics, he only needs to disconnect then reconnect his connection. The rest is dependant on the functions of Microsoft Windows.
If you are on Windows 7, just wait for your connection to stabilize. The same thing happen to my wifi the other day because of the Canon printer. All I did was wait a few minutes and I get assigned a new LAN IP.

I've already tried that numerous times and haven't succeeded, as well as a few other basic/general suggestions. I posted here to get more information from more experienced people. Anyway, I appreciate you taking your time to reply but I dislike your assumption that I'm a child and your assumption that I can't do as you suggested before it being suggested.
I've also tried (to the best of my ability) everyone else's suggestion and none seemed to work, so I just reformatted my mom's laptop and that did... for now

Hate to bring up old threads, but did you ever find out why the IP was reassigned?
I only ask in the event it does this again. It's a shame to go through the hassle of a reformat for something that should be as simple as reassigning an IP.

That was an extreme option for something that would have taken maybe 5 minutes to fix. I usually have that problem when one of the computers on the network has a static IP which I've set myself, then the DHCP (The router/modem or server) tries to assign that IP address on something automatically only to cause both to not function. I usually increment the set IP by 100 or so as to avoid another collision.

I use static on my network. This avoids people that have cracked my encryption key just logging on and using my network.
