Any type of VRAM will do, as long as it has a PCI-E card and can fit in your PC case.

Yeah, the slot need to fit. It must be specific to the one on your motherboard, eg. If the GPU is AGP, you must have an AGP slot (most old computers have agp slot, but not necessarily.) or if the lost is PCI-e you'll need a pci-e card. And yes, the card needs to fit in the case perfectly.
