So, CT, I have an unlocked T-Mobile HTC MyTouch 3G. Problem is, I have AT&T, and I don't know anyone with T-Mobile. I discovered after I got the phone that to activate it (to pass setup) I need a T-Mobile SIM card. Won't let me use WiFi to verify I have a google account.
Can I root the phone first, and then will I not even bother having to go through setup?

Hey funny thing is, I just got an HTC MT3G (White)
You can't root the phone until you get passed the Welcome Screen
I'm assuming you have 3g with your AT&T SIM card
Click the Android, then click Menu -> Settings -> APN (Or something like that)
add these settings
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:[email protected]
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN Type: leave blank
EDIT: shut off your phone, hold the back button and power button, and give me all your fastboot info

Er, you can use it...you gotta edit the APN, idk what AT&T's apn is

I did that, that's what you told me to do. It still doesn't give me a signal.

There's one more thing you can do, buy a t-mobile prepaid card, put it on a t-mobile sim card, change apn for default t-mobile (already entered as epc.t-mobile.com or something like that) change it to wap.voicestream.com
From there you can load a tzone hack (in the screen click read terms and blah blah blah) it opens a web page that let's you buy a one day data plan, I vouch for this method because that's how i did it
This option is pricey though, so if you dont feel comfortable with it, ask someone with a t-mobile data plan
